NDP: Government emails tell a different story on Science Centre shut-down

QUEEN’S PARK — The Official Opposition New Democrats called attention to internal government emails that reveal the closure of the Ontario Science Centre was planned long before the last-minute announcement in June.

MPP Jennifer French, NDP Critic for Transportation, Infrastructure and Highways, asked the government to explain the discrepancies between these backroom exchanges and the story the public was told.

“The Ministry had already begun to prepare the communications materials about the closure on June 11 – before the cited engineering report had been received, and 10 days ahead of the purported urgent closure of this world-class institution”, said French.

The Ontario Science Centre’s landmark structure in the Don Valley remains boarded up, with exhibits drastically reduced and shipped off to a strip mall location. The NDP has highlighted the government’s use of the Science Centre’s relocation to justify the multi-million dollar parking garage it will share with the Therme mega-spa.
